Final Artist Statement

From the beginning of this project, I knew I wanted to create a book of opposites for my zine and I stuck with that idea through the final. I went with a concept along the lines of the theory that opposites attract and picked sets of opposites I wanted to depict including enter and exit, love and hate, angel and devil, and dreams and reality. Enter and exit was the idea I had for the front and back covers of my zine to portray a physical means of delving into the story and leaving the zine. Love and hate was based around the song lyrics “It’s a thin line between love and hate” and I wanted to show two people in a relationship that equally love each other as much as they hate each other in some ways. Angel and devil was more about showing how there is a little bit of heaven and hell in us and I included the quote “Devil to some, angel to others.” Dreams and reality was my most abstract piece in the zine. For dreams I depicted a dream like scene with clouds and a mannequin head dreaming. I contrasted dreams with reality by including mannequins that are being choked by hands around their neck representing the fact that reality has a choke hold on us regardless of how big our dreams are. This project helped me learn so much about photoshop and illustrator that I did not know before. I liked creating the digital art and then adding words to sort of make graphic design posters. I had so much fun trying to depict opposites, it was definitely challenging, but very worth it.
