John Cage changed the way that people think about music and how they listen to music.
His conceptual piece called 4'33" reinvented typical music, which was unheard of during his time. I think Cage is a genius because I have never thought about the role of silence in music before, but now I will never take silence for granted. Many magical things can happen during silence. I like how Cage was experimental and chose to defy norms. Some of the best things in life happen when you break the rules, and that’s why I think Cage is so well-known. Cage had a great impact on listeners and was considered controversial. He evoked so many emotions from people like confusion, anger, joy, and peace. Cage decided to disrupt the normal harmony of traditional music and create something that changed the way music was made forever. Cage was painting a picture with his music to leave sounds up to interpretation and to give everyone a unique experience unlike anything else. In a way, Cage made music that was refreshing and I think that that is what people needed at the time he created his piece. I like how Cage thought about noise as interesting and not distracting, because there are thousands of sounds that we hear during any given day and each one is so unique and Cage found inspiration in that. Cage wanted the sounds to inform the entire composition, he did not try to force the sounds to do what he wanted, Cage let the sounds do what they wanted and listened to their needs.
